North Texas journalists and photographers will return to Brookhaven College for the fifth annual True Stories to share their experiences in the field.

True Stories will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 26 in Room K234.

Professionals will map out their Texas-sized tales and photos from concept to publication in this interactive forum. Attendees will hear about the creative process that brings a project to life.

Daniel Rodrigue, journalism and photojournalism professor, said it is important to hear stories about how experts in their field do what they do.

“It’s important for students, as they grow and learn in their craft, to hear stories about how experts in the field – whether it’s hearing from New York Times best-selling authors or award-winning investigative reporters or the top photojournalists in North Texas – struggled and then overcame issues and hurdles,” Rodrigue said.

Jeff Guinn, an award-winning investigative journalist and bestselling author, will be among the speakers. Guinn has written books including “The Life and Times of Charles Manson,” “The Road to Jonestown,” and “Go Down Together: The True Untold Story of Bonnie and Clyde.”

Danny Fulgencio, photo editor and freelance photographer, will talk about his work as a photographer. Fulgencio said he appreciates the opportunity to dispel misconceptions about photojournalism and potentially save future professionals from making bad decisions.

Other speakers will include Elvia Limón, engagement reporter for The Dallas Morning News and Obed Manuel, a former staff writer for The Courier who now writes for The Dallas Morning News covering Latino issues. Eva Raggio, a freelance arts journalist who has written for Playboy, Nylon, D Magazine and the Dallas Observer will also be speaking.

Past speakers have included local journalists including Pete Freedman, founder of Central Track; Christian McPhate, freelancer for the Dallas Observer.

Rodrigue said up-and-coming journalists are enriched by hearing these pro-tips from guests sharing how they got started and the lessons they learned the hard way.

Free Dunn Brothers coffee will be available while supplies last.
