Brookhaven Campus held a drive thru pantry on Nov. 13, at the S building parking lot. Community members were able to pick up grocery items including vegetables, fruits, canned food and other essentials.
North Texas Food Bank partnered with Dallas College to help provide the students and the community with groceries. The food pantry drive is available monthly throughout different Dallas College campuses and the schedule can be found on the school’s website.
Food Pantry
Community Pantry Days are available every Friday for all nearby residents. Students can access the community pantry in room J104 from Monday through Friday. The only requirement needed is a student ID or student ID number. The service also includes a Clothing Closet where students can pick up to five items a month. This includes tops, bottoms and shoes depending on availability. The pantry is also accepting food and clothing donations.
Dallas College offers a variety of resources that students can utilize. Each department aims to assist and support the students to make sure they have the best chance of learning and succeeding. Some resources are listed as follows:
CAREER AND DEGREE PLANNING
Success coaches (advisers) guide students from enrollment to graduation or transfer. They help students develop a degree plan depending on their career choice and current circumstances. Advisers also assist in connecting students to any resource departments they need. Success coaches are available for walk-ins, located in S building room S113. They also offer virtual meetings through the Dallas College website under Virtual Success Coaching, or emailing them at [email protected]. Career and Transfer Skills Development
This department aids both current students and alumni to ensure a smooth transfer to the next stage of their career, whether it is a university or job. They provide free career coaching, exploration and assessment for students who are undecided on what career they would take or for anyone who wants to explore their options. This department also offers job application assistance by doing career and transfer fairs, resume writing classes, career workshops and mock interviews. The Career and Transfer Skills department can be found in room S065 or email the office at [email protected].
Military Connected Services
Military Connected advisers help veterans or service members regarding VA benefit questions, job opportunities or any other assistance they need. The college also offers workshops that helps translate military skills to civilian jobs and focus groups to connect with other veteran and service members. Students can also visit the office in-person by visiting room S205.
LEARNING SUPPORT
Tutoring Sessions
Tutors can discuss lessons that students need clarification on. Students can walk in at the Learning Commons, Library or set an appointment through Navigate. There is also online tutoring available at eCampus located at the bottom of the course home page. Subjects have their own station and different schedules depending on the tutor’s availability.
For medical related majors, room X2022 offers a tutoring service exclusively for life sciences like biology, nursing and radiology. Irene Ruban, academic coach, said that this tutoring caters to the different learning methods of students like visual or kinesthetics. They also offer advice for applying and getting admitted in the medical programs offered by Dallas College.
Accessibility Services
This department implements accommodations for students with disabilities and ensures that they have an equal opportunity to learn and excel in their career paths. Tamir Weaver, accessibility assistant, explained that the accessibility office provides counseling services as well, where they aim to help in every way that they can. Their office is located in room S136 open on weekdays.
BASIC NEEDS
Shelter and Utility bill assistance
For students who are struggling to pay their rent and bills, Dallas College encourages students to fill out the Student Care form in order for coordinators to reach them. Transportation
DART is a public transit system that connects cities through buses, light rail, commuter rail and ride share. Dallas College partnered with DART so that credit students who are enrolled for more than six hours or continuing students who are enrolled for 96 or more credit hours are eligible for a free Dart Student Pass. To get the pass, qualifying students must submit a request form found in the Dallas College website and the department will notify the student of their eligibility.
Emergency Aid
Dallas College students who are experiencing an emergency and have exhausted all financial aid options can fill out the Student Care form and apply for emergency aid, a financial assistant for urgent, unforeseen and non-recurring emergencies. Health Center, Counseling and Psychological Services
Health services such as vaccines, confidential health counseling, first aid and medical screenings are offered at the campus health centers. They also offer a Nurse Help Line available to both staff and students who are in need of medical advice or information. To reach the line, contact 972-860-8970 Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
