The Brookhaven Bears men’s baseball team chomped down the Mountain View Lions during the home game on March 19 that ended in 15-9 win for the Bears.
The crisp cool breeze hitting against the leaves from the trees around the surrounding playing field. The brown wilted leaves following the wind sticking up against the black net that separates the spectators and players. Supporters of the Bears seated on the small stands bundled up as the sun gently embraces them while they watched the conference match at home against our Dallas College Mountain View Lions.
The Brookhaven Bears were off to a slow start. During the first inning, the Lions scored three runs, meanwhile, the Bears could not keep up and did not get any runs. Determined, both teams were neck and neck during the second inning, neither team able to score any runs. The score stayed the same, 0-3 in favor of Mountain View.
The Bears persevered and gained three runs during the third inning, allowing both teams to be even. But it did not last for long as the Lions scored two more runs during the fourth inning.
Nearing the end of the fifth inning, with one swift, powerful swing and the sudden sharp impact of the metal bat clashing against the worn baseball, the striking of the ball changed the momentum of the game.
By the end of the fifth inning, the Bears made a comeback, gaining six runs. The tide of the game was overturned – the new score was 9-6 with the Bears now leading. Each of the Bears shouted in excitement as they all jumped and proceeded to chest bump each other. The iconic early 2000s song “Let’s Get It Started” from the musical group Black Eyed Peas blasted from the speakers. The mood shifted as the Bears took control of the field.
“Offensively, we did a lot of great things,” Shaquille Thomas, head baseball coach of the Bears, said after the game.
The Bears wasted no time preventing the opposing team from earning any runs. The score was now 13-6 with the Bears still leading.
Thomas said that defensively, the Bears struggled during the game. “We were trying to make hero plays instead of just knocking the baseball down trying to roll a double play” Thomas said.
It was not until the eighth inning where Mountain View was finally able to score two runs. Then, during the ninth inning, the final score was 15-9, with the Bears coming out on top.
The Bears have been in a tough spot lately as they previous loss two matches before this. “It’s good to get a win in conference, it’s been a while,” Caleb Kennedy, one of the Brookhaven Bears, said after the match.
Overall, this conference match was a boost the Bears needed after their previous matches during March. Between March 1 and 18, they struggled, losing seven out of nine matches. However, they turned things around on March 21 – 29, securing five wins and suffering just one loss.
The Bears will continue to compete against the Lions and other campuses throughout April and May. The Bears played Dallas College Eastfield on April 2, a home game for the Bears, with two more away games played against Eastfield on April 3 and 5. Fans looking to support the Bears can find more information about upcoming games on the Brookhaven Athletic website under the 2025 Brookhaven Baseball Schedule.
