Saldivar Elementary
Brookhaven Campus women’s scocer team made an appearance at Julian T. Saldivar Elementary, where the school hosted the Soccer Sparks Community Festival for families to learn about resources available to them within the community. The event was set up through a partnership between Walmart and Dallas ISD, both present at the event with tables and games.
As parents went around the school parking lot, meeting with vendors from the area, their children played games and earned prizes. As families began to drift in, the soccer players handed out Dallas College signs and Brookhaven jerseys. Later, the athletes showed the kids basic drills and then used the same cones to make a miniature soccer field. Alex Denning, the head soccer coach, was present as well, documenting his players connecting with the children.
There were approximately 280 people present, said Leslie Molina, the parent support specialist at Saldivar Elementary. Her and her team are planning on eight more events similar to this one in order to further provide parents with the tools they need for their children to succeed.
Metrocrest
Athletes from Brookhaven participated at the fourth annual community picnic hosted by Metrocrest Services. Resource partners and 11 sponsors were there, offering free food and entertainment. There were even several people dressed as movie characters at the Sept. 27 event.
A freshman on the baseball team, Isaac Coleman, commented, “It’s a great event. You get to inspire young kids about being in a community.”
Despite the blazing midday sun, the athletes played soccer with the local kids, laughing and engaging with them. Ava Little said, “I really enjoyed being here with my team and serving the community.”
Lizzete Salas, Metrocrest’s Community partners manager said this was the biggest picnic they have done so far, with over 1,000 community members in attendance.
