Theatre Brookhaven will close out the fall semester with a production of Mark Brown’s “The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge,” a comedic sequel to Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”

The play was inspired by Brown’s experience following the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Centers. He said he noticed an outpouring of kindness and generosity following the disaster. However, with time, the event was left behind and everyone returned to their was of before.

The plot takes place one year after Scrooge’s miraculous transformation, according to Brown’s website.

But Scrooge does not remain a changed man long. Brown said he imagined Scrooge, like everyone else, returns to his old ways.

“Scrooge’s nephew only comes around every Dec. 24 to wish his uncle a Merry Christmas,” Brown said on his website. “Where is he the other 364 days of the year? … Why can’t Scrooge’s nephew stop by some random Friday just because he wants to see his uncle?”

After loosing the Christmas spirit, Scrooge turns to his suing Jacob Marley, his deceased business partner and the ghosts of Christmas. He accuses them of breaking and entering, kidnapping, slander, pain and suffering, attempted murder and the intentional infliction of emotional distress.

And thus, the trial of the century was born. Although “The Trial of Ebenezer” Scrooge” is set a year after the events of the Christmas classic, the result is more “Bah Humbug” than “Ho! Ho! Ho!”

Like a true penny pincher, Scrooge represents himself while the ghosts, Marley and their respective attorneys stand trial. Together, they reflect on the night in question in hopes of somehow setting the story straight
