The legacy of Spider-Man carries on as the newest installment to the film franchise is set to release this summer July 31.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” made movie trailer history when it exploded online as the most viewed trailer, surpassing 1 billion views in four days.
Shortly before the teasers official release, Sony released snippets of the film across many online platforms.
Upon release on March 17, the trailer grossed over 718.6 million views in 24 hours, according to an Variety. This makes it the most viewed debut trailer of all time, surpassing the “Grand Theft Auto VI” video game trailer that attained 475 million views. The excitement for the film has drawn up many speculations and theories as to how “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” unfolds.
Tom Holland returns to the big screen almost five years since the most recent installment to the current Spider-Man movie franchise “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” released in December 2021. When we last saw Peter Parker, he was swinging over the Rockefeller Center in a classic Spider-Man suit.
The whole world forgot that Peter Parker was Spider-Man, even his closest friends and loved ones. Peter had to deal with losing his aunt, his friends and his future as Peter Parker. In “Brand New Day” it doesn’t look like things are going to get much better.
One of the central conflicts of the film, apart from the many classic Spider-Man villains Holland will have to face, will be the rekindling of his relationships with Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds and Zendaya’s Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson. In a clip that debuted exclusively at CinemaCon, we see MJ kissing a new love interest much to the dismay of Peter.
Along with these emotional struggles, Peter has to face a new wave of emerging crime in New York City battling numerous villains including Boomerang, The Tarantula and a new secret foe who seems to have mind altering abilities. Along with this group of villains is Scorpion, who is being played by Michael Mando who is reprising his role as Mac Gargan from “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
One of the more popular fan theories has been around the unconfirmed role of actress Sadie Sink. Many fans online speculate she could make her appearance as X-Men mutant Jean Grey. This could explain the possible use of psychic powers we see demonstrated in the trailer.
Other notable members of the cast include Mark Ruffalo respiring his role as The Hulk and Jon Bernthal returning as The Punisher. This is the first time The Punisher has been on the big screen since the 2004 movie.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton spoke with ComicBook at the “Wonder Man” junket and noted how excited he was about directing the newest Spider-Man film. Cretton directed “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” which is credited to have some of the best fight choreography out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe titles.
Succeeding director Jon Watts who directed the first three Tom Holland Spider-Man movies, Cretton noted that directing Spider-Man was one of the roles of a lifetime for him and he is planning to take the character in a new direction for this film.
There are few characters in pop culture who have as much of a reach as Spider-Man does. With the release date of his newest movie slowly approaching, fans grow even more eager to see their favorite hero on the big screen once again.
