Brookhaven College student Derek Madrigal was brutally beaten on South Padre Island during Spring Break.

According to www.nbcdfw.com, Madrigal was jumped by 10 men March 17 while protecting a female friend. NBC spoke with Madrigal’s father, who said his son was stabbed nine times and has a collapsed lung. Madrigal has had two surgeries since March 17, according to his father.

Madrigal’s friends Patrick Jones and Ryan Leach, of Dallas, were separated from him during the fight, according to NBC. A bystander posted a graphic cell phone video of the fight to live leak.

The video shows a man repeatedly hitting Madrigal over the head with a large-size travel cooler lid. A 33-year-old man from San Antonio was arrested in connection with the attack, according to dfw.cbslocal.com.

The woman Madrigal protected is also a student from Dallas, according to www.valleycentral.com.

Dr. Thom Chesney, Brookhaven president, released a statement March 21. “Let’s keep Derek in our thoughts for a full recovery,” Chesney said.
