“We’ve got the ships, we’ve got the men, we’ve got the money too.” Those words were in a once popular British jingle in 1878, sung as they barreled toward another war with Russia.
Unfortunately our despots are not as artistic, but the sentiment remains as we bomb barely seaworthy fishing boats off the coast of Venezuela.
The most powerful navy in human history conducts this operation with munitions that costs 32 times what Venezuleans make in a year, according to the CIA. All while we let people go without food assistance because feeding the hungry is not in vogue with evangelical interpretations of the Bible.
The news cycle has moved quickly beyond the authorized release of the Epstein files like a junkie trying to power level their way to Valhalla.
Yet, we continue to murder alleged drug smugglers who think that open topped fishing boats are the best option as opposed to the submersibles we have been tracking since the ‘80s.
All this is to say, we may be on the verge of another Second Gulf War. This time, we are going back to our roots and trying for regime change in Latin America so we can let American corporations exploit their resources.
I can’t wait to wade into another decades long campaign against an entrenched insurgencies so that we can send our boys home in body bags for the sole profit of the military industrial complex and oil.
And to anyone who says, “We will steam-roll Venezuela,” I will see you in 10 years when we are reading about how the FARC is teaching Venezuelans how to get good at smoking Americans in another repeat of Afghanistan.
My only hope is that the latest broadcast of their war crimes becomes unpalatable enough for our Congress to act to curb this brewing war before it begins. But, as history shows us, once America starts the propaganda it is only a matter of time before we are in another war.
