    Lady Bears soccer takes win

    The Brookhaven College women’s soccer team ended a conference game against North Lake College by outplaying the Blazers 7-0 on Oct. 11.

    The Lady Bears won the two teams’ previous encounter Sept. 23 with a score of 4-0.

    Five minutes into the game, Lady Bear Joseline Sorto dribbled the ball inside the box and saw teammate Julie Ortega with no marker. Ortega shot a low shot to the net and almost made the Lady Bears go up by 1.

    Right before minute 13, Ortega missed a shot from long range but had another opportunity for a goal and blasted the ball into the left side of the net, giving the Lady Bears their first goal.

    Lady Bear Alexus Lopez ran across the right wing and crossed the ball. But the cross turned into a shot on target and surprised Blazers goalkeeper Diana Henriquez to make the score 2-0.

    Four minutes passed, and Lady Bear Linda Molina centered the ball to a marked Ortega. Easily tapping it in with her foot. The ball slowly went in, and Ortega got her second goal of the day to put the Lady Bears up by 3.

    At minute 31, Marin, who dove and blocked Lexia Martinez’s shot from long range to save the Blazers.

    The Lady Bears went into halftime with a 3-0 lead.

    With the start of the second half, the Lady Bears continued to expose the Blazers’ defensive errors.

    Within five minutes, the Blazers’ goalkeeper made a crucial mistake passing the ball to Sorto, who immediately scored, making the score 4-0. It only took 14 minutes for Sorto to score again.

    She rolled the ball to her left, forcing her marker to go right, and shot the ball low enough to pass by the keeper.

    “We always have different combinations [of plays],” Sorto said after the win. “We don’t keep it the same.”

    The Lady Bears were awarded a penalty with 18 minutes left after Blazer Ariel Garcia took down Ortega on the penalty box.

    Ortega shot the ball toward the right net, snagging the hat-trick and making the score 6-0.

    With two minutes left to play, Brenda Hernandez took her time with the ball, looked up and shot from outside the box. The play gave the Lady Bears the winning point, 7-0.

    “It feels great representing my school Brookhaven,” Hernandez said after being awarded national player of the week. “I couldn’t do it without my team.”

    The Lady Bears boosted their winning record to 9-2-1 and will begin the road to the Metro Athletic Conference going to playoffs Oct. 27.

    “It’s been a long time since Brookhaven soccer has been [this successful]. I’m really proud of our overall team performance,” Jim Elder, head soccer coach, said.
