After Syria released chemical weapons on civilians, the U.S. responded with Tomahawk missiles

President Donald Trump issued a military order April 6 resulting in more than 50 Tomahawk missiles being launched in Syria.

The order is the first assault from the U.S. on the Syrian government in response to its recent chemical weapons attack on civilians, according to the Associated Press.

The U.S. target included the runway, aircraft and fuel points of the airbase where the chemical attacks were launched.

Trump’s decision, which was not announced prior to the attack, comes after several attempts to change Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s, destructive behavior toward the country’s civilians, according to the Associated Press.

In a press conference held in Mar-a-Lago hours after the attack, Trump addressed his thoughts on Assad’s actions and called on civilians of all nations to come together to end terrorism of all types.

The chemical attack launched on Syrian civilians by their government used the banned nerve agent sarin, according to The New York Times.

“It was a slow and brutal death for so many. Even beautiful babies were cruelly murdered in this very barbaric attack,” Trump said.

As of press deadline, the White House has not issued any statement on whether more attacks will continue, but U.S. presence will remain until a decision has been reached, according to CNN.
